Cerrillos

Turquoise Trail jewelry and pottery are artistic highlights of the town of Cerrillos, which was influenced by Indian culture and Spanish settlement. One of the oldest of the Old Spanish mineral developments in the Southwest, Cerrillos still mines turquoise! Gold, silver, lead, zinc, and turquoise were mined heavily in the 1880s, supporting the town’s 21 saloons and four hotels. Now, you will discover a mining museum, petting zoo, and state park with over 5 miles of hiking trails.

Madrid

Madrid is another historic town along the Turquoise Trail. Here, you will discover a distinctive artist’s community. The unique geology of the area allowed for a rich history in coal mining, and the Santa Fe Railroad was the recipient of this supply. Famous for its Fourth of July parade, Christmas displays, and minor league baseball games, the company town was a heyday for activity. Now, it offers quality shops, galleries, and an original tavern. There are festivals and concerts at the historic ballpark, and holiday celebrations are still in full swing!

Golden

Another wonderful stop on your journey from Santa Fe to Albuquerque is Golden. The site of the first gold rush west of the Mississippi, Golden had several large mining companies operating in the 1800s. An annual fiesta at the famous historic church in Golden is a highlight of this small town. The festival follows a ritual drama originating in medieval Spain.
